WHIPLASH

What causes whiplash? Whiplash can happen from far more things then only car
accidents. Did you know that playing a game of football, being pushed from
behind, taking a nasty fall, or even a violent sneeze can produce a whiplash injury?

Any sudden stop of your body that forcefully snaps your head and neck forward,
backwards, or sideways can severely injure your necks soft tissues, muscles,
ligaments, tendons, and nerves. Even minor accidents can cause a major whiplash
injury. Just ask personal injury lawyers, doctors, and chiropractors that see
literally hundreds of whiplash cases each year ... they will confirm relatively
minor rear-end thrusts and rear-end collisions can cause serious whiplash injury.

Whiplash happens when the soft tissue in the spine is stretched and strained after the back is impacted in a violent, forceful jerk. The injury does most commonly occur in car crashes involving sudden deceleration, but the injury, as mentioned, can also occur in other strenuous physical activities such as
football, soccer, diving, and yes, even dancing. Other frequent causes of
whiplash include heavy sport injuries and blows to the head, falling on something
(high jumpers and poll vaulters) or someone punching you (boxing and ultimate
fighters). Repetitive stress and strain using the neck (such as being in front of
the computer for hours on end, are common.  And most unfortunately, child abuse,
the violent shaking of a child can cause whiplash injury as well as in more
serious injuries to the child's brain or spinal cord ... not to mention the
obvious negative psychological scars it causes the victim.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Stiff/Sore Neck
Tingling Feeling Down The Arem
Pain Between Shoulders
Difficulty turning head from side to side
Dizziness/ loss of strength in neck
Headache
Neck, shoulder or arm pain
Numbness, weakness
Ringing in the ears
Chest or mid-back pain

If you are experiencing one or more of these symptoms, you may have whiplash
without even ever being in an accident. Don’t let the absence of symptoms keep
you from having a complete spinal examination. Some whiplash symptoms can be
immediate; however, some symptoms are often delayed.

“Check you spine ... and you’ll be fine,” says Dr. William K. Haley of Pleasant
Hill, CA. He reminds us, “Preventative spinal cord check ups are recommended for
just about everyone. Nine out ten people will experience some sort of back pain
during their lifetime, and many of these ‘negative’ repair cases could be been
avoided by simply visiting a qualified and experienced chiropractor early on,
well before nerve degeneration begins.”
